New Country, New Life

Tomorrow I will be flying to Luanda, Angola. This is not the first time I am there, I have been there several times, but never for such a long period of time, I will be there for an "unknown" period of time.

Luanda has its fame: "The most expensive city in the world", dangerous, chaos, no taxis, no infraestructure, the difference between rich and poor getting bigger and bigger, among others.

A little about myself, I am 34 years old, work on the oil industry and I have been to several countries in Africa for work: Congo, Gabon, Angola. This time is different, I am going to one of the biggest cities in sub-saharan Africa.

Getting the visa was a taste of what life might be there. The consulate was not issuing any visas because they didn't have the "stickers" to put on the passports, the time to have them ready was from 2-3 weeks, at the end it was 3 weeks of waiting. I still don't have the passport in my hands, in theory the visa is ready, we will see tomorrow. This is just a 30 days visa, once in the country, I have to submit all the papers again and try to get a one year work visa, not an easy thing to do.

This blog will be an attempt to keep track of the adventures/ misadventures living in Luanda. I hope there will be more good times than bad times...
I am not looking forward for the long flight, plus the airport waiting times, I am gonna miss my bed!
Now, I have to pack.

P.S. I will be flying this route: Oaxaca - Mexico City - Paris - Johannesburg - Luanda with Air France and TAAG (Angolan Airlines). Two nights on the plane, 25 hours of effective flying time, with long layovers on the airports.
